Smorgasbord April 2017

Smorgasbord episodes are made up of several smaller items that aren’t big enough to warrant a dedicated episode. It lets me talk about a variety of things, answer questions, and just riff on food and cooking related topics.

Talking points for today’s smorgasbord episode (for the complete discussion be sure to listen to the full episode in the player above!):

Marshmallow Egg Nirvana

In my most recent episode I lamented the fact that I could no longer find one of my all-time favorite Easter candies: marshmallow eggs. These are the candies that are hard-coated on the outside with a chewy marshallow center. Well apparently they are still easy to find in Canada because friend of the show Jen Milroy (one-third of the Full of Fibre Podcast crew) sent me four bags of them! Let’s just say my month was made. Be sure to check out Jen’s show for good old family fun: Full of Fibre Podcast

By the way I am always open to accepting interesting food donations that I can try and talk about on the show. Got something you need to share? Send me an email to feedback@kitchencounterpodcast.com

Cauliflower Crust Pizza…Next Great Thing?

My sister wanted me to make a cauliflower crust pizza for her birthday dinner. None of us have ever tried it before so it was kind of fun. The results were mixed however. We used a recipe from Damn Delicious.

Thoughts on the Instant Pot Multi-Cooker

My wife and I picked up an Instant Pot multi-cooker a couple of months ago. This great machine pressure cooks, slow cooks, cooks rice, steams, and even makes yogurt. We’ve been trying out several different recipes and have been enjoying it. So far we’ve focused on pressure cooking. If you are wary of pressure cooking, this machine will take all the apprehensions away. Want to buy an Instant Pot?

Is Blue Apron Good For Home Cooking?

You practically can’t go on the internet or listen to a podcast these days without running across an ad or story on Blue Apron, the home delivery meal kit service. You basically get all the components to a complete meal delivered to your front door and all you need to do is cook it. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about this service and others like it (Hello Fresh, HomeChef, etc.). Full disclosure; I’ve never tried Blue Apron or any services like it, but I’m willing to grant the food is great and the recipes are easy. Yet I still can’t shake a feeling that services like these are not a good thing for home cooks.

Nerdy Nummies Giveaway

I’m finally getting around to a cookbook giveaway. Today’s short review is on Rosanna Pansino’s “Nerdy Nummies” cookbook. This book was suggested by listener Jocelyn Wilson. Listen in for my review and how to win your very own copy! If you don’t win but still want a copy, pick it up on Amazon!
